Are We Running Out Of Space?

      Andrew Blankstein and Robert Faturechi published a very interesting article in the LA Times newspaper titled "L.A. County jails may be out of room next month." It talks about how in the near future L.A. County jails will be running out of space for many criminals. They are going to take a couple of steps to avoid this as much as possible. "The department is looking at ways to channel more offenders into education and substance abuse programs rather than jail." This way, offenders will spend more time outside then in jail occupying space. Some criminals will also get very lucky. If they had been sentenced to a four year term in jail, some might be getting out in two years due to overloading of people. This is a major downfall for the L.A. County. "The Sheriff's Department has the funding to open only an additional 1,800 beds, far below the number needed to accommodate the tide of state prisoners coming its way, the report said."
     I believe this is a very important articles because some offenders might take advantage of this and might think that they will not sit in jail for the time they actually have to. We have to take more cautious actions in the outside world and look for a rise in criminal activity. If the L.A. County does not find a way to patrol and control of this break out, we will be in big trouble!
